On January 5th, Cavallino-Treporti celebrates the traditional Pan e Vin, one of the most deeply rooted rituals of the Epiphany period. The festival has its origins in the agricultural world of Veneto: the great bonfire, in which the “vecia” is burned, represented the end of the past year and the wish for a favorable new cycle. The behavior of the flames and smoke was interpreted as a sign of good fortune for the upcoming season, transforming a symbolic gesture into a shared moment of anticipation and observation.
In Cavallino, there are two public events dedicated to this tradition. At 6:00 PM, in Piazza Cavallino, the Amici del Paviner organize the Pan e Vin on the water, a particularly evocative version thanks to the backdrop of the winter lagoon. At 7:00 PM, in Treporti, the Pro Loco proposes the bonfire in the Marina Fiorita parking lot, keeping the tradition alive with a more classic setting.
At both festivals, there will be befane (witches), who will deliver stockings to the little ones, while a small refreshment will accompany the evening. The Pan e Vin thus remains an event that intertwines popular tradition, seasonal rites, and an atmosphere tied to the Epiphany period.
