Among the greatest portraitists in the history of photography, Philippe Halsman (Riga 1906 - New York 1979) was able to work always between gaze and introspection, immediate intuition, surrealism, flashes of genius, and refined technique.
Halsman became a photographer in 1930s Paris, closely connected with the surrealist milieu. When he arrived in New York in 1940, he brought his European sensibility, psychological attention, character play, and a desire to innovate to the pages of major magazines.
Everyone passed in front of his lens: politicians like Churchill and Kennedy, movie stars like Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, Yves Montand, Barbra Streisand, scientists like Einstein and Oppenheimer, artists like Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, and especially Salvador Dalí, with whom he created a unique gallery of extraordinary, dreamlike, and surreal images over years of collaboration, where the artist and the photographer merge magically.
Also on display is the famous “jumpology” series with stars and personalities who agreed to jump in front of his lens.
In his career, Halsman signed over 101 covers of Life, more than any other photographer.
Exhibiting 100 images that trace the entire career of the great author.
Curated by Alessandra Mauro and Suleima Autore in collaboration with the Halsman Archive in New York, the exhibition is promoted and produced by the City of Piove di Sacco (PD)|Culture and Contrasto, with important support from BCC VENETA Credito Cooperativo S.C. .
The initiative is realized in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Padua and Venicepromex. .
Catalog published by Contrasto.
