Lunga Via delle Dolomiti: Cortina d’Ampezzo - Calalzo di Cadore

The Dolomites Cycle Path is one of the most rewarding routes in the entire Alps: cycling through environments and landscapes recognised by UNESCO as a Natural Heritage of Humanity.

The first stretch of bike path crosses coniferous forests and flanks important natural areas, protected by the Natural Park of the Dolomites of Ampezzo, such as the two alpine lakes: Lago Bianco and Lago Nero. The route starts from Passo Cimabanche, a natural watershed between the Ampezzo basin and Val Pusteria, and faithfully follows the route of the former Dolomites railway, which was built during the First World War and abandoned in 1964. Along the way you will still find the original stations, tunnels and bridges set in spectacular and deep gorges.

In Ospitale you can visit a distinctive church built in the 13th century and dedicated to San Nicolò, protector of travellers. Near Cortina d'Ampezzo, the track is tarmacked and also used by many walkers, so it is recommended to moderate your speed and proceed carefully. After visiting the "Pearl of the Dolomites" you return to the route that remains at high altitude and passes between exclusive hotels and stately homes.

In San Vito di Cadore, the massive Monte Antelao faces the unmistakable Monte Pelmo and the cycle path enters mixed coniferous forests. The new cycle bridges and old tunnels allow you to ride safely through the picturesque towns of Borca, Vodo, Venas, Valle and Tai.

Pieve di Cadore should be reached in time to make a stop of artistic interest; in addition to being the birthplace of Titian Vecellio, the town preserves a considerable number of buildings of historical interest, an archaeological area of Roman origin, an archdeaconal church and two museums: one dedicated to the history of the Magnificent Community of Cadore and one to glasses.

After reaching Calalzo di Cadore, the route ends near the train station, where you can take the train to Belluno or a public bus with a bicycle transport service.
