Venice - (Ravenna) - Mantua: The Po and its Delta

The cycle route that introduces tourists to the wonders of the long Venetian coastline towards the Po Delta crosses the Venice lagoon, the 'fishing valleys', the mouths of numerous rivers and golden sandy beaches, before following the course of Italy’s longest river as far as Mantua.

If you choose Venice as your starting point, you initially cycle across the islands that delimit the Venetian lagoon up to Chioggia, which has preserved its typically Venetian atmosphere. The route has no particular hazards or difficulties. As you leave the city the landscape becomes agricultural - this is the land of red radicchio and Chioggia's famous vegetable gardens. After crossing the bridge over the Adige, you enter Italy’s youngest territory: the Po Delta. You will stop in Rosolina, a seaside town immersed in the coastal woods and surrounded by extensive lagoon valleys. In fact, the next stage is the Via delle Valli, an exhilarating crossing immersed in the unique atmospheres of the Delta: the smells of the lagoon, the sea breeze and an extraordinary variety of birds. In Porto Tolle, a unique seaside town, the route splits in two. To the south you will cross all the branches of the great Delta, passing through the provinces of Ferrara and Ravenna, whose provincial capital (the mosaic capital) marks the halfway point of the journey.

Heading west you go back along the River Po to discover the province of Rovigo, visiting Adria, Rovigo, numerous rural villages, the original carousel and popular entertainment museum of Bergantino and Ostiglia, before arriving in Mantua (masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance).

Both routes are marked with bicycle-tourism signage (in Veneto trail sign I3). Some stages involve the use of the seasonal bike-and-boat service.
