The Feast of the Redeemer is one of the most cherished celebrations for Venetians, blending religious significance with a spectacular show. On Saturday night, fireworks attract thousands of visitors: light and reflections on the unique stage of the San Marco Basin create a kaleidoscope of colors against the backdrop of the city's spires, domes, and bell towers.
This event commemorates the end of the terrible plague that struck Venice between 1575 and 1577. The Redeemer, or "notte famosissima" as Venetians colloquially call it, is an integral part of the culture of the lagoon city's residents. Even today, they continue to honor the gastronomic traditions, folklore, and celebrations passed down by their ancestors, which have made this deeply "Venetian" festival renowned internationally, as well as one of the city's largest tourist attractions.
