On the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2026, the Santa Caterina Museum hosts a meeting dedicated to the relationship between the Republic of Venice and the inland territories, told through the documentary “The Gold of Venice”.
Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the need for timber to construct ships drives the Serenissima to pay particular attention to the woods of Veneto, Friuli, and Istria. The management of this precious resource leads to the development of practices for the protection and safeguarding of the territory, which the documentary relates to contemporary environmental awareness.
The meeting opens with the presentation of the film by Simone Piaser, president of Treviso Sotterranea, and Mate Mekiš, tour guide and scholar of the history of the Republic of Venice. Following this is the screening of the documentary, directed by Nicola Pittarello, with a duration of 52 minutes. The day continues with a discussion by Ferdy Hermes Barbon, president of the Ateneo Veneto, dedicated to “wood marks,” and a visit to observe those still present on the beams.
