CASTELLO DI THIENE

The Thiene Castle is considered the most prominent Gothic building of the 15th century. Built in the Vicenza area as a civil residence; an extraordinary example of pre-Palladian Venetian villa, a unique specimen of its kind, both for architectural characteristics and functional purpose, a cornerstone in the evolution of Venetian villas.

The Venetian villa, from an architectural point of view, found its most complete expression in the 16th century with the constructions of Andrea Palladio, who was able to synthesize aesthetic and functional needs into a type of villa that remained substantially the same until the fall of the Serenissima in 1797. However, Palladio did not invent the concept of the villa: he renewed the forms that these agricultural residences had already acquired over the previous centuries.

The castle therefore serves as a model for the subsequent developments of Venetian villas, as a noble residence and a place of cultured and refined life in the countryside where the family’s interests were tied.
