On Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st May, "The Historical Reenactment of the Battle of Calmasino of May 29, 1848” takes place in Calmasino. Although the military event was strategic for the outcome of the battle of Curtatone and Montanara and the capture of the fortress of Peschiera, it is seldom mentioned in history books. The event, organized in collaboration with the Municipal Administration of Bardolino, aims not only to promote the territory but also to evoke the ideals of the Italian unification.
The Battle of Calmasino took place on May 29, 1848, during the First Italian War of Independence. The Piedmontese troops (3rd infantry and sharpshooters) repelled the attack of the Austrian column led by General Zobel, which aimed to reinforce Peschiera, securing a partial victory for the Savoy. While the battle of Curtatone and Montanara was taking place, the Austrians sought to liberate the fortress of Peschiera. The Austrian attack began around 1:00 PM on three columns, targeting Calmasino, Cisano, and Bardolino. The Austrians initially occupied hill positions such as Monte Pilla, Monte Bosco de' Gervasoni, and Monte del Cimitero. Despite the initial loss of ground, the Piedmontese, led by General Bes, counterattacked and routed the Austrians.
More than one hundred reenactors in period uniforms and armaments will bring to life, through the streets of the town, the key moments of the clash of May 29, 1848, which took place during the First War of Independence between the Piedmontese and the Austrians.
