Circumnavigating an island at the mouth of a large river is an excellent opportunity to enjoy a 360° view of the wonderful delta environment. The route, which starts and ends in Porto Tolle and runs along the top of the Polesine Camerini island embankment, is a splendid route that allows visitors, especially those on bicycles, to enjoy views of the Po Delta from a privileged vantage point.
Just beyond Porto Tolle, the provincial road leads to Ca' Dolfin: on one side, the view stretches over a regular succession of cultivated fields and, on the other, over the waters of the Po di Venezia, before focusing, a few kilometres further on, on the bend of Volta Vaccari and the lagoon backwaters of Busa del Canarin and Busa Bastimento, home to wildlife that is unique in the world.
Continuing south, the route passes through the villages of Scardovari and Bonelli, small fishing villages characterised by colourful houses and cube-shaped chimneys, which dot the flat and orderly countryside. At the southern end of the island, you arrive at Barricata, where you can relax on the beautiful beach. Just beyond the Sacca di Scardovari, where the prized PDO mussels are farmed.
Thanks to its extraordinary quality, the Scardovari Mussel is the first Italian mollusc to have been awarded, in 2013, European status of Protected Designation of Origin. It is certainly not by chance, given that its particular distinguishing features are due precisely to the characteristics of the environment of the Po Delta, the largest wetland in Italy
