Merloned towers, bifore, spires, and large windows make Castello Papadopoli Giol an unmistakable presence in the landscape of San Polo di Piave. However, the medieval appearance can be deceiving: the residence owes its current shapes mainly to the nineteenth-century transformations desired by the Papadopoli family, which gave it the elegant neogothic character of English inspiration.
In 1850, Francesco Bagnara, a set designer from Teatro La Fenice, was commissioned to design the palace and the large Historic Park that surrounds it. About 12 hectares of winding paths, monumental trees, lawns, and bodies of water make up a romantic landscape designed to offer continually different perspectives of the Castle. Among the most significant specimens are a large Cedar of Lebanon and a Ginkgo biloba dating back to the second half of the nineteenth century.
Damaged during World War I, the property was purchased in 1919 by Giovanni Giol, who promoted its recovery. Today, the complex brings together the Castle, the Historic Park, and the ancient structures of the Giol Agricultural Company.
A visit to the park allows for the discovery of this scenery at a leisurely pace, following the paths through the vegetation and reaching the pond, from which some of the most suggestive glimpses of the residence can be seen.
<p>Access to the Castle or the historic part of the Winery is only available with a guided tour, for groups of at least 15 people and only by reservation. Access to the Park is open to the public. The timings can only be verified on the website, within each individual visiting section.<br></p>
