Shrine of St Augusta

The Shrine of St Augusta at Serravalle, the ancient part of Vittorio Veneto (province of Treviso), is the final spot of an interesting journey, to make on foot, which starts from the Via Calcada, behind the apse of the Serravalle Cathedral. From here you ascend a monumental stairway built on the ruins of the ancient town gate "Porta del Terraglio", demolished in 1931. It takes around half an hour, going steadily, to reach the top.

At the top of the stairway, the beautiful stone fountain and the statue of St. Augusta can be admired. The trail continues following a cobbled muletrack until reaching a church built on the site of the Saint's martyrdom. The yard before the church is covered with rock and grass; from here you can enjoy a wonderful view of Vittorio Veneto and the plains, stretching out to the Venice lagoon. The church a small gothic loggia on its left side, with a well in the centre, and on the right side is the bell tower, adapted from an embattled medieval fortification.

The oldest part, the Chapel of St Augusta Virgin and Martyr, is adorned with medieval frescoes by Giovanni Antonio da Meschio, a local artist, and preserves the relics of the Saint, which are now the destination of many pilgrimages. On the cross-vault, the Four Evangelists and the Mystic Lamb are depicted.

Other places worth visiting  are the Cathedral of Serravalle, where one of Titian's altarpieces is preserved, and the Loggia of Sansovino.
