The Coldai lake, under the north-west face of the Civetta, can be reached in winter without too much difficulty, provided that the snow is well settled. The coast above Malga Pioda is notoriously at risk of avalanches, so great care must be taken.
From Palafavera (1505 m), in Val di Zoldo, take the route to Pioda mountain hut (1816 m). From the Pioda hut, continue to the Sonino Refuge (2132 m), which is closed in winter.
We recommend stopping there anyway, as the lake is icily shaded.
Descent back down the same road to the Pioda mountain hut. From the malga up to the Col di Dof ridge, unmarked and untrodden, but an easy route and with panoramic views.
You then follow the ridge to the upper station of the chair lift and descend to Palafavera on the run currently closed.
